Cupcakes, Wigs and a Fancy Gig

It is heart-warming to know that the sense of comradery we cherished among country women in the last century is still alive and well in our local Dubbo area today. We’ve laughed and cried with the stories of times gone by on television shows like Downton Abbey and A Place to Call Home which tell the tales of colourful and committed characters as they support one another in tough times.

The Dubbo Wig Library Volunteers could well be the feature of one of these shows. They are a small dedicated group of passionate and talented women who make time in their busy lives to provide a free wig library service for local women undergoing chemotherapy and losing their hair. Qualified hairdressers volunteer their time to fit wigs, give advice on maintaining a healthy scalp and wig care, and teach scarf tying techniques. Other volunteers in the group strive to source and manage the donations which maintain this as the only free wig library service available in Australia.

Western College trainer Betty MacArthur jumped at the opportunity to donate her time and talent and gave the group some free tuition on how to decorate elegant cupcakes for the upcoming ‘Downton Abbey Style High Tea in Memory of Rhiannon McMahon’. The college happily donated the use of a training room where the ladies learned professional cake decorating techniques.  They perfected the art of modelling fondant into delicate pink roses and piping buttercream into luscious blooms atop homemade cupcakes in a fashion which would make Mrs Patmore gush with glee. The high tea will be hosted by Julie Bendall on 1st April and proceeds will be donated to the Wig Library Volunteers group.

Western College are very proud to be one of the many local businesses supporting this event which will see a delightful afternoon of old world charm unfold on the lawn at Julie’s house featuring valet parking and horse drawn carriage rides to the venue, vintage fashion displays, lots of prizes and giveaways, and food (including beautifully decorated cupcakes!) worthy of an event hosted by Lord and Lady Grantham.
