New skills a ‘win win’ for Moree
12-Jul-2011
Western College is urging Moree’s business community to grasp the opportunity to build their skills base with a number of locals set to complete an innovative program.
In three weeks time, seven determined local students will graduate from the college’s five week Early Childhood Services course and are itching to put their newly gained skills to work. The program, run in partnership with OEC (Orana Education Centre) and the AES(Aboriginal Employment Strategy) is part of the Indigenous Employment Program, and co-ordinators are urging the business community and Early Childhood Service providers of Moree to “give the students a go”.
During the course, the students have developed skills in ensuring children’s health and safety and applying first aid, identifying and working with the social and cultural needs of indigenous families as well as honing some essential life-skills in preparation for entering the workforce.
“Now all they need is a go,” says co-ordinator Kerri Capill from Western College, a Dubbo based community, not-for-profit training provider. “Once they’re in the workforce, they will be given ongoing mentoring and guidance from the AES, so this is a great opportunity for employers to snap up newly-skilled workers who are keen and rearing to go but who also have the back-up of a well-respected and successful local employment service. It’s a win-win for Moree.”
After successfully completing the course, the students will gain three units towards a Certificate III in Children’s Services, which can be completed through a traineeship with a local early childhood service provider, for which assistance is available.
“This is a genuine community partnership program and for it to work, the students really need the support of Moree’s business community,” Kerri said. “If you think you might have a place, or could make a place, at your business or early childhoodservice, then consider taking on an already skilled trainee.”
This round of the course finishes on August 3, so if you are interested in supporting the employment program, contact OEC’s Manager of Social Enterprise – Bryan Milne on 1800 065188.
