Indigenous Aussies urged: Be all you can!
30-Jun-2011
Western College has teamed up with local employment organisations OEC and AES (Aboriginal Employment Strategy) to offer practical training and employment opportunities to aboriginal people in throughout our region.
The innovative program, dubbed ‘Beacon’, has been developed in consultation with indigenous communities to address the glaring need for relevant and practical assistance for people to learn skills that will help them reach genuine employment goals
The three courses currently on offer are aimed at aboriginal people who are either not currently employed but who genuinely want to learn new skills and work towards joining the workforce.
- Get Ready for Work: A three to four week course designed to brush up on and develop skills to prepare for entry or re-entry to the workforce
- Introduction to Community Services Work: A course covering first aid and other important skill areas that will help people wanting to get a job involving child care or other community services.
- Introduction to Building and Construction: A hands-on and very practical introduction to work in the building and construction industry. This course will lead to a number of “tickets” required to work in these professions.
As well as direct training in these areas and the development of “skills for life”, people who undertake the courses will receive individual mentoring from the AES, both before and after entering the workforce.
Assistance will be available to secure traineeships or apprenticeships, which gives people the opportunity to “learn while they earn”.
The courses will run at centres throughout the region until August.
