Chance for Ridge locals to boost child care skills
12-Jul-2011
Lightning Ridge is in line for a boost to its skilled labour force with an innovative training program kicking off next week.
Western College, in partnership with OEC (Orana Education Centre) and the AES (Aboriginal Employment Strategy), is running a five week Early Childhood Services course as part of the Indigenous Employment Program and is urging locals to consider taking part to build their child care skills.
During the course, students will develop skills in ensuring children’s health and safety and applying first aid, identifying and working with the social and cultural needs of indigenous families as well as honing some essential life-skills in preparation for entering or re-entering the workforce. “The practical skills people will learn during this course can be translated not only to the area of early childhood services, but to a wide range of employment
opportunities,” says co-ordinator Kerri Capilll from Western College, a community, not-for-profit training provider. “At the end of the course, we will seek to placestudents with local business and early childhood service providers, and we are urging the Lightning Ridge community to get behind the program.”
Once in the workforce, students will be given ongoing mentoring and guidance from the AES, so this is a great opportunity for employers to snap up newly-skilled
workers who are keen and rearing to go but who also have the back-up of a well- respected and successful regional employment service.
“It’s a win-win for Lightning Ridge.”
After successfully completing the course, the students will gain three units towards a Certificate III in Children’s Services, which can be completed through a traineeshipwith a local early childhood service provider, for which assistance is available. Training will take place at the Lightning Ridge Bowling Club. Places are still available
for the course, with more information available by contacting Course Co-ordinator Kerri Capill on 68 842899.
