Art Competition Now Open!
10-Feb-2012
Western College is calling on aspiring artists from across the region to put paint to canvas (or pen or pastel to paper!) with the launch today of its second annual art prize.
In association with the Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC), the theme for the 2012 competition again borrows from Western College’s core principles. Last year, entrants were asked to submit their artistic interpretations of “integrity” – this year they need to find their “passion”!
College CEO Ron Maxwell said the aim of the competition, which offers winners a share of more than $3000 in prize money, was to encourage local artists to explore their craft and to boost interest in regional art as a whole.
“The theme of ‘passion’ fits not only with what we’re about here at Western College. We’re passionate about education and about providing opportunities for people to explore and reach their potential. And we’re passionate about our region as a whole, sowhat better way to express the importance of harnessing passion than through art? We have some incredible talent here in this region and Western College is proud to be a part of helping to develop and nurture that talent,” Mr Maxwell said.
The competition, which closes in September, is open to all residents of the local government areas of Dubbo, Midwestern, Narromine, Gilgandra and Wellington. As well as the acquisitive first prize of $2200, there will be a prize of $500 awarded to an entrant who is undertaking full or part time study and a $500 prize for an entry from an indigenous artist.
As with last year’s prize, Western College has partnered with the WPCC, whose expertise and dedication to the promotion and to art is invaluable in fostering emerging artists across the region.
Entries are open now and will close on September 24, with entries to be delivered to the WPCC on October 2-3. For terms, conditions and information on how to enter, please see our entry form for full details.
